Weekend Backpacks Goes Back to School!
Back to School Events
During the month of August, Weekend Backpacks’ volunteers including corporate help from Wellpoint and Rosedale Federal, packed 3000 backpacks. Blue and purple backpacks were filled with grade appropriate school supplies for elementary and middle school students. WJZ spotlighted the project as well. Our drivers delivered the bags to 50 schools so the children were ready for the start of school. Ten volunteers attended back-to-school events where they helped welcome back the families and distribute the bags.
New and Improved Van
The Weekend Backpacks’ cargo van had a busy summer – the inside was outfitted with shelves and a safety divider while the outside was wrapped in Ravens’ purple with Poe (the Ravens’ mascot) sporting a backpack filled with food. We celebrated the van’s readiness to deliver with an event at Arlington Elementary with Poe, five Ravens players and the cheerleaders. Goodbye Bedford – Hello Lutherville Station
We are saying thank you and goodbye to our facility at 1505 Bedford Avenue this week. This space has served the organization well and allowed us the financial flexibility to grow our program and support more students. In order to support even more students and have an efficient facility, we are moving to Lutherville Station in Timonium to a space twice as big with a loading dock and covered area for loading the cars. We are hosting an Open House on November 2nd – keep an eye out for an email with the specifics.
New Website and Impact Report – Be Sure to Look at FY24!
Check out our new website! There are spaces for volunteers, funders and the students and families we support. We can see who has been visiting the site and thanks to the news clips with the Ravens, we’ve had more traffic on the site – leading to more understanding of the issue of food insecurity and our mission to combat it.
